Other ways of exile. L’Albera and the castle of Requesens
Visit to the Castle of Requesens
Sunday, November 24, 2019, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Castle of Requesens, located in the municipality of La Jonquera, in the Natural Place of National Interest of the Albera, is a fortification of medieval origin (11th century), enlarged in the 13th century and, after its disuse from 16th century, rebuilt at the end of the 19th century. It was linked to the counts of Empúries, until the 15th century, and to that of Peralada-Rocabertí, until the nineteenth century.
The guided tour, given by the historians Lluís Serrano and Miquel Serrano, will include a tour of the two main areas, its historical evolution, the great reform of the nineteenth century, literary references to the castle during the first half of the 20th century and the stage of the Civil War and Republican exile in Albera.
In the vicinity of the Castle there are different areas of interest in the natural heritage (fauna and vegetation, with diversity of types of forest) and also cultural and historical heritage, such as dolmens, churches, farmhouses, fountains, preindustrial elements such as lime kilns, furnaces of tiles and ice wells, the swamp, monumental trees, etc.
Price: € 4 per person (price of the entrance to the castle)
