The Great Monasteries in the Empordà (I)

Mediaeval Empordà

The first part of this route, which winds its way  between vineyards and olive trees, will take you to the
Romanesque monasteries in the Empordà.

The route starts at the monastery in Vilabertran, where you can visit this beautiful 12th-13th century Augustinian Abbey, which has the largest precious
metal cross in the country, from the 14th century. The route then moves on to Rabós d’Empordà and, in this village in which it seems that time has stood still, you take the road to the Benedictine Sant Quirze de Colera Monastery, a gem of Catalan Romanesque architecture, which has the oldest Romanesque cloisters in Europe, and is located in a beautiful place in the Albera Natural Space. Then return, towards Vilamaniscle and Garriguella, to take the N-260 towards Llançà. Along the way, you can look at the picturesque Quermançó Castle, which can be seen from Llançà and Vilajuïga in the summer. The route finishes in Llançà, with a walk through the centre of the town, which still preserves the 13th-century bell tower of the former Romanesque church.
