Claustre de Sant Domènec and Cultural Tourism Center

Claustre de Sant Domènec and Cultural Tourism Center, a unique historical treasure in the region. This cloister is the sole remaining relic of the ancient Augustinian friars’ convent, likely founded in the second half of the 11th century. In 1578, it was occupied by the Dominicans, giving it its current name, and remained under their care until 1835.

The conventual buildings, including the church, were demolished some years ago, leaving the cloister as the only surviving structure. It has been demonstrated that the cloister was reassembled at a later time, challenging to pinpoint, utilizing earlier Romanesque elements. The sculptures on the capitals are a work of diverse themes.

Various types of capitals can be found, some with geometric shapes, others with cubic designs featuring geometric and phytomorphic patterns, and a distinct group characterized by the presence of pine cones in the volutes. Noteworthy are also capitals with rampant lions, others with lambs, and some with mermaid-bird figures. Among the historiated capitals, some depict biblical scenes such as the story of Adam and Eve or the representation of paradise.

This captivating space serves as a window into the rich history and Romanesque art, inviting you to explore its sculptures and narratives in every detail.
