Can Palau-Agullana bunker route

The Agullana bunker was built more than eighty years ago. It was what the military called an “observatory” and called it “O-2”. With this tour we will be able to visit a bunker of exceptional construction.

The Agullana bunker was built more than eighty years ago. It was what the military called an “observatory” and called it “O-2”. It was destined to be the most important pillar in the defense of the eastern border of the Pyrenees against any attack that came from the north.

The mission of the observatory was the direction of the border defense that had been established around La Jonquera. The military action had to be directed from Agullana to defend an entry of enemy troops along the general road. It is precisely for this reason that the area where the bunker is located was chosen as an observatory, for the magnificent views it offers over this part of the Empordà plain. From the observatory we can visually embrace a space that goes from the castle of Bellaguarda, already in the territory of the French state, to a few kilometers beyond what was the old urban core of the neighboring population, La Jonquera.

In February 2020, the Can Palau Bé Bunker was declared a Local Cultural Interest (BCIL), and the Agullana City Council has arranged an itinerary to be able to visit it and enjoy at the same time some extraordinary views of the environment The route will have its zenith with the visit inside the observatory and in the contemplation of the landscape from the viewpoint that has been built for that purpose.

The route starts in Plaça Major d’Agullana, at the intersection of Itinerànnia AE22. From there we will take Carrer Concòrdia until we find the intersection AGU1 with Camí del Ral. We will continue along Carrer de l’Era, following the yellow markings, until we find Carrer de la Pinyareda. We will go to the right where after a few meters there is the AG2 Camí de Can Palau crossing, there we will turn left and follow the dirt track that will take us to the mas can Palau. Once we get there, we will leave the farmhouse on the left and go to the right, surrounded by vines, follow the path at the end, go left and in 150 meters we will find the AGU6 crossing, go right and cross a gate. Following the path we arrive at the AGU3 crossing, where we find an information booth and head towards the bunker.

The first thing you will find when you arrive is the outer structure of the observatory. This is a reinforced concrete installation in which we can see 3 peepholes. We will go around it and enter through the east door. Once inside we will advance through a corridor that will take us to the main room. This is where the terrain was controlled and operations directed. Appreciate the thickness of the walls and admire the magnificent views offered by the observation windows. From one you can see the village of Agullana and from the other two you will have a complete view of the Portús sector. You will be placed exactly where the brigadier general was to direct the defense of the area.

If the bunker is closed we will follow the AGU4 indicator which indicates the West door and the viewpoint. At the West gate we can see the trenches and following them we will reach a final AGU5 intersection that takes us to the viewpoint located above the bunker and where we can enjoy the magnificent views. From the viewpoint we turn back and head towards Agullana, following the same way as we went.
