Monastery of Sant Llorenç de Sous (Albanyà) Albanyà

It became an important monastery in the county of Besalú during the Romanesque period. Its splendor took place around the year 1000, when it became independent of the Bishopric of Girona. After the heavy earthquakes of 1427 and 1429 and the gradual decline of rents, it began to decline. The building was abandoned and was deteriorating. In 1580 only one priest resided, and the cult was gone. Different units were occupied during its history. This situation continued until the outbreak of the last civil war in 1936, when the whole complex was abandoned.
From 2002 to 2014 there have been different restoration campaigns from the Diputació de Girona, which have allowed the site to be prepared for your visit, as well as the installation of explanatory panels that allow you to follow it. and make the visit understandable. It is possible to visit the old Romanesque church, part of the cloister has been redone, and the sleeping room of the Gothic monks has been restored but with pre-existing Romanesque.

The monastery is located on the hillside of the Marededéu del Mont, in a place with important views of the territory.

The visit is free.
