Tower and Church – Santa Maria de Vilamacolum

Discover the Tower and Church – Santa Maria de Vilamacolum, a monument rich in history and architecture. With a mention in 1094 as Sancta Maria de Villa Mucorum, this church has left its mark in documents from the 12th to the 14th centuries. The construction took place in two distinct stages: one in the 11th century and the other in the 12th and 13th centuries, undergoing reforms in later periods.

The semicircular apse and a short section of the nave bear witness to the 11th-century construction. The use of cut stone in the building corresponds to a reconstruction during the advanced Romanesque period in the 12th and 13th centuries. The current late Gothic ribbed vault of the nave is believed to be part of a reform from the 15th or 16th centuries when the building was fortified. The side chapels date from the years 1648 and 1649. Explore this unique structure that reveals layers of its history in every corner.
