The village is formed around the church and the square and stretches out along the paths that lead up to it. Many of the houses have two floors, with lofts or granaries in the upper part, stores covered with stone or brick vaults in the lower part and terraces that adjoin the façades over rounded arches, lending the overall structure a highly interesting appearance.
The Sant Martí de Pau church is located in the centre of the village and dominates the Plaça Major square. It is a Romanesque building with one nave and a semicircular apse revealing two phases of construction.
La Creu Blanca (White Cross), a little over 2 km away from Pau, was an important entrance for cattle to the Rodes mountain range. This cross is the only remaining monumental cross of the old lands of the Sant Pere de Rodes monastery, which has survived intact to this very day.
The fresh water lakes of Vilaüt used to form part of the deepest area of the old Castelló lake and are filled with rain water and the irrigation channels that lead there. When the lake is full it attracts wetland birds but the drought that it is suffering from has had an affect on the wetland flora and fauna. In 1985, the first bird viewing station in Catalonia was built there, giving visitors the chance to observe all kinds of bird species.
The Barraca d’en Rabert dolmen is a tomb with a trapezoidal-shape chamber built using local gneis (metamorphic rock) and used to have a passageway that can no longer be seen. They date back to the second half or the end of the 4th century BC.
The Empordàlia Agricultural Cooperative brings together producers from Pau, Roses, Vilajuïga and Garriguella and has substituted the former Agricultural Cooperative of Pau, the Roses Winery, the Cooperative Alt Empordà in Vilajuïga and the S.A.T. Mare de Déu del Camp de Garriguella. They produce excellent olive oil (Oli de Pau) and some outstanding wines (Grenache wines, muscatels, vintage wines, etc.) Guided visits are available throughout the year. We would recommend visiting during the wine harvest in autumn or during the olive harvest in winter. Prior reservation is necessary.
