Fortià was once part of the county of Empúries, which was controlled by the monks of Sant Pere de Rodes from the Early Middle Ages.

The fortified parish church of Sant Julià i Santa Basilissa, in a late gothic style, is worthy of mention, as is the house of Queen Sibila, an enormous two-storey house with a striking façade made from large, well-squared ashlars with elegant rectangular windows that are simple and austere in style, despite being added during the Renaissance.
