Church of Sant Andreu

Discover the Old Church of Sant Andreu in Vila-robau: A Historic Treasure

The Church of Sant Andreu in Vila-robau is a living testament to the past, an architectural gem that withstands the test of time. This is the oldest of the two churches preserved in Vila-robau, with a rich and fascinating history.

Initially serving as the parish church of the nucleus until the construction of the new temple in the 18th century, this small single-nave building features a barrel vault, a horseshoe-shaped apse, and a quarter-sphere vault directly open to the nave. In more modern times, two lateral chapels were added, enhancing its structure.

The façade stands out with an elegant portal with a single slightly lowered arch, constructed with roughly hewn small-sized stones. A simple and primitive bell tower completes the exterior appearance. Inside, the arches delineating the lateral chapels preserve mural paintings from the 18th century, while on the apse wall, traces of mural paintings attributed to the Romanesque period can be observed.

Despite being privately owned, this historical gem underwent a partial cleaning and restoration intervention a few years ago, preserving its splendor for future generations. The Church of Sant Andreu in Vila-robau is a must-visit for history and architecture enthusiasts.
