Explore the Church of Sant Esteve in Vilaür: A Fortified Romanesque Treasure

The Church of Sant Esteve in Vilaür is a Romanesque building dating back to the 12th or 13th century, with subsequent reforms and fortifications likely added between the 15th and 16th centuries. Its presence is mentioned as early as 1237, and between 1279 and 1280, it stands out in the Rationes decimarum for its economic support of the Crusades.

The earliest documentary sources indicating fortification works date back to 1299 when the Bishopric threatened the knight Dalmau de Creixell with excommunication if he did not cease the constructions. The visible fortification works today likely date from around the end of the 15th century. Around the 16th century, a new entrance door was fixed to the south, while the original door, subsequently sealed, fell out of use in the 16th or 17th century. The lintel of the current door bears the date 1595 as the moment of its inauguration.
