Naturalist trip to New Guinea

TRAVEL TALKS: “NATURALIST JOURNEY TO NEW GUINEA” WITH JORDI SARGATAL – OCTOBER 7, 2023

As part of our series of travel talks in collaboration with ANDANA TRAVEL, we are delighted to introduce Jordi Sargatal, president of the APNAE Association and a renowned traveler. He will share with us one of his most cherished adventures.

In 2008, during the summer, between July 11th and August 11th, Jordi traveled to West Papua, Indonesia. He was accompanied by Josep de l’Hoyo, Eduardo de Juana, then president of SEO Bird Life, and guided by Iwein Mauro, a Belgian expert familiar with the area. Additionally, a group of indigenous people assisted them with their equipment.

They explored places like the Island of Biak (Ibele, Nimbokrag, and Arkaf) and the fantastic Island of Waigeo. Despite the challenging conditions and occasional precarious situations (they only slept in a hotel bed three times in a month), not to mention encounters with blood-sucking creatures like spiders, beetles, and leeches, they had the joy of observing several species of Birds of Paradise and many others.

During this talk, we will learn about their journey, the bird species they encountered, and hear anecdotes that will make for an enjoyable session.
