The municipality is situated in the northern part of the region of the Alt Empordà, in the Province of Girona. It covers 20.97 square kilometres at the intersection of the south-eastern end of the Albera range and the south-western extremity of the Serra de Rodes. Latitude North 42º 20' 31'' Longitude East 3º 03' 52''.

It borders on the municipalities of Vilajuïga, Pedret and Marçà, Peralada, Mollet, Rabós, Vilamaniscle, and Llançà.

The highest point in the municipal area is La Serra de la Baga d'en Ferran - altitude 314 m. -, which is the point of origin of two of the area's irrigation channels: Rec de Santa Coloma, and Rec de les Fonts. The river Garriguella, which flows out of the Rec de Fontanilles, passes across the plain area. Near the municipal boundary with Peralada is the second highest point in the area: Puig de la Malaveïna, also known as Puig de les Costes (104 m. above sea level).

The springs which usually flow all year round are: La Font d'en Petit (also known as La Font de l'Om), La Rovellada, and La Font d'en Sucarrat (also known as La Font de Sant Nassari).

GARRIGUELA DE BAIX

This was the first inhabited settlement in the area, but we know nothing about its origins. From this period there remain what can be seen to be walls and the foundations of towers which enclosed a number of ancient dwellings. These remains are situated near the junction of the roads that lead to Peralada and Capmany, and are known as “la Periguilla ".

There are the ruins of the former chapel of Sant Sebastià (16th century), of which today there only remains one lateral arch, which has been partly rebuilt. Walking through the streets of this area we can observe that the majority of the houses date from the 16th and 17th centuries, and have the structure of that period, with cellars on the ground floor. It should be noted that some stone gateways bear the dates of their construction. A former 16th or 17th century windmill still remains standing, with its cylindrical tower which is well preserved, and one of the few that still exist in the Empordà. The 16th century Mas N'Hortús is a fine example of the popular architecture of the region.

GARRIGUELLA DE NOVES

This is the larger centre of population which grew up around the old Romanesque church of Santa Eulàlia, dating from the 9th and 10th centuries. Part of this Romanesque church is visible today from behind the present parish church of Santa Eulàlia, which was built in the 18th century. The parish cemetery was on its eastern side.

Most of the houses in Garriguella de Noves date from the 18th and 19th centuries. On the ground floors are the cellars and near the entrance door the tools for farming and the animals, with courtyards at the rear.

At the end of the 19th century, emigrants returning from America built a park near the Spring of Sant Nasssari, where even today the ruins of the former 13th century chapel of the same name still remain. It was during this period that the main streets in the village were laid out.
